The country adopted the Costa Rican flag on November 2, 1906. The national flag has five horizontal bands: blue, white, red, white, and blue. Each of these colors has excellent meaning: blue represents freedom, the horizon, the opportunities; white represents peace, wisdom, and happiness; red represents the bloodshed throughout the wars in defense of the country's freedom; and in the center, the coat of arms representing Costa Rica's commitment to democracy and justice.
