Equatorial Guinea adopted its national flag on August 21, 1979. It is made up of three horizontal bands of green, white, and red with a blue triangle at the hoist side. The green band stands for the rich vegetation and the vital resources of the country, and the white band constitutes peace and unity for a diversified population. The red band symbolizes the campaign for independence and self-determination; the blue triangle refers to the sea that surrounds Equatorial Guinea, and the country's hopes for progress and development are expressed.
