Fiji adopted its flag on October 10, 1970, when it won independence from the British colonial state. The shield is divided into four quarters in the fly-half, and a light blue background with the Union Jack in the upper left corner makes up its constitution. A yellow lion bearing a cocoa pod in the top left quarter reminds us of Fiji's strength and wealth formed by agriculture. A white dove symbolizing the peace and unity of Fiji's diverse population is in the top right quarter. Sugar cane, one of Fiji's main exports, is shown in the bottom left quarter, and the bottom right quarter is a palm tree against a blue sea and sky, symbolizing the islands' natural beauty.
