The 55 states that make up the African continent are united to form the African Union (AU). Founded on May 26, 2001, it is an organization that promotes economic integration, peace, and security in the region. The AU's flag is gold on green, and its gold map references hope and natural resources of the African continent. It also has 53 gold stars representing each member state at creation.
