Belarus became independent from the Soviet Union in 1995 and adopted its national flag. The red and green horizontal stripe is decorated with traditional Belarusian patterns. In contrast, the white vertical stripe on the hoist side carries the same meaning; the central red symbolizes bravery and courage, and the green represents hope and future growth. The white stripe is for peace and purity. The patterns on the flag, with which the Belarusian folk art is saturated for ages, symbolize the wealth of the Belarusian historical and cultural heritage.
