Belgium adopted the national flag of Belgium in 1831, just after obtaining independence from the Netherlands, which makes it one of the oldest flags in Europe. Its trio of black, yellow, and red vertical stripes comes from the coat of arms of the medieval Duchy of Brabant in Belgium today. The yellow represents prosperity and generosity; the black stripe represents the determination and strength of its people. The red stripe is for the courage and the love of the country.
