Bolivia adopted the national flag in 1851, one of the oldest flags in South America. The symbol consists of three horizontal stripes – red, yellow, and green – with the center featuring the Bolivian coat of arms, and is believed to have been inspired by the colors used by Simon Bolívar, one of the heroes leading the fight to be freed from Spanish rule. The red stripe represents bravery and sacrifice, and the yellow represents mineral wealth and natural resources.
