The officially adopted flag of Finland was May 29, 1918. It features a blue cross on a white background, with the proportions being 11:18. It is said that the blue cross refers to the lakes and sky of the country and that the white color refers to snow and winter. The particular design of the flag has a historical background, as it was an armored forces arm inside the Finnish Army that was utilized throughout the war for independence from Russia 1917-18.
