While the Liberian flag does not have red and black stripes, it does have eleven horizontal stripes, six red and five white, to mark the eleven signers of the Liberian Declaration of Independence in 1847. A blue square with a white star sits in its upper left corner. The red and white stripes represent courage, moral excellence, purity, and cleanliness. The blue square signifies African unity, and the white star is the first independent black state in Africa.
