The Madagascar Flag has two horizontal bands of red and green, with a vertical white band on the hoist side. There are four white stripes in a cross in its top left corner. The red for sovereignty and independence, while the green for vegetation and a land of hope and prosperity. It signifies the purity and integrity of the government by the white stripe. The four stripes in the corner symbolize the four traditions ever since, Merina, Betsileo, Sakalava, and Boina, and the unity of various ethnic groups.
