It is an intergovernmental organization comprising some 193 member states in all parts of the world. The organization was established on October 24, 1945, to promote international cooperation and maintain peace and security among its members. With a blue background, the globe appears in the center of the UN flag, showing all continents except Antarctica. Olive branches around the globe indicate peace and a white emblem with a map of the world flanked by two laurel leaves (presumed symbol of victory).
