Algeria's national flag was adopted on July 3, 1962, as the country gained independence from French colonial rule. It consists of two equally proportioned vertical stripes, green to the hoist and white to the fly. A Red Crescent moon and star are embroidered in the center of the flag. This flag has colors and symbols that have great meaning to Algerians. The color green represents Islam; white symbolizes purity and peace; the Red Crescent moon and star symbolize Islam and appear on many flags of Muslim-majority countries. But this flag still unites and represents the struggle for Algerian independence.
