Botswana gained independence from Britain in 1966, adopting the current national flag. It has a light blue background and a black line running through it top and bottom with a white line in between; the blue resembles the water on which this largely dry country mainly depends. The black and white stripes represent cooperation and racial harmony among people from different ethnic groups in Botswana.
