Brunei gained independence from Britain in 1959 when the national flag was adopted. The colors are in the form of a yellow background with two diagonal stripes – black and white, taken from the bottom left corner to the top right corner, and the yellow is assumed to be the royal color of Brunei for the sultan and the family. The black and white stripes represent the country's chief ministers who advise the sultan on matters of government and religion.
