May 20, 1902, was the day the national flag of Cuba was adopted. It has five alternating stripes of blue and white with a red triangle at the hoist with a white star. Blue represents the three Cuban departments that existed in colonial times; white stands for purity and freedom, and red represents the bloodshed in Cuba's struggle for independence.
