On February 15, 1965, the Maple Leaf Flag became Canada's national flag. The red maple leaf is in the middle on a red background that has a white square in the center. The old Canadian Red Ensign, which bore the British Union Jack in the top left corner, had given way to this flag. In fact, it is interesting to note that Canada's national flag, which was not universally accepted from the first, is slightly more controversial than one might realize. Although it has since come to symbolize Canadian identity, it is well-known around the world. Canadians also hold cultural and historical importance for the maple leaf on the flag.
