Chad's flag has three vertical stripes: blue, yellow, and red. The adopted design in 1959 represented the country's cultural diversity and connections to its history. The clear skies and hope, grey; the sun and desert, yellow; and the sacrifices and unity of the people, red. (This) tricolor format is inspired by that of (the) French flag, representing Chad's colonial history but also including Chadian distinct identity as an independent nation. The five-pointed golden star in the heart of the flag represents the union and progress under a common destiny of all the people of Chad.
