Germany's national flag is also known as the tricolor flag, having three horizontal stripes: black on top, red in the middle, and gold on the bottom. The ratio of width to length is 3:5. The red stands for bravery and courage, and the black stripe represents determination and strength. Generosity and understanding are imbibed in the gold stripe. During the Napoleonic Wars of the early 19th century, these colors were first used.
