The flag of the Philippines consists of a horizontal bicolor of red and blue, both of equal size and on the left side, a white equilateral triangle with a three-point star in the middle. The three yellow stars within the triangle represent Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao, the central regions of the country. The colors for the flag were thought to have been based on the American flag; the Philippines was once a US territory until the Philippines gained its independence in 1946.
