The Greek national flag comprises nine horizontal stripes alternately blue and white, with a blue square at the top left quarter from which hangs a white cross. The ratio of width to length is 2:3. The nine stripes symbolize the nine syllables that are used in the phrase' Freedom or Death' when Greece fought for its independence from the Ottoman Empire. These colors were said to represent sea and sky, blue and white, respectively.
