After being unilaterally liberated from Haiti, the Dominican Republic flag was officially adopted on November 6, 1844. It consists of a white cross extending through the middle into four equal rectangles of both blue and red, with the coat of arms in the center. Those are colors: blue represents liberty, red represents bloodshed in defense of independence, and white represents salvation—an open Bible for faith, an olive branch for peace, and a palm branch for victory.
