Chile's national flag is one of the oldest in Latin America. It was adopted on October 18, 1817. Two equal horizontal bands of white and red with a blue square in the canton, containing a white, five-pointed star. White is for snow in the Andes mountains and in purity; red for bloodshed during Chile's fight for independence; and blue for the clear skies and the Pacific Ocean that frame Chile. The lone star in the blue square is a guiding light for the nation's progress.
