The blue field of the flag of the Cook Islands contains a Union Jack in the top left corner and 15 white stars to represent the 15 islands that form this country. A combination of the local colors, a yellow circle for golden sunshine, a blue ring for Pacific Ocean and unity, and a white star for Tiare Maori, one of the national flowers, as well as four traditional symbols, black and white triangles symbolizing Christianity, together make the flag, which was approved on October 13, 1979.
