The Croatian flag was adopted on December 21, 1990. The red (top), white, and blue horizontal bands with the Croatian coat of arms in its center. The colors are based on the country's historical coat of arms representing different aspects of Croatia – red for bravery and courage, white for peace, honesty, and purity, and blue for loyalty, truthfulness, and vigilance. On the center is an armored shield with five smaller shields, representing five Croatia regions: Croatia proper, the Dubrovnik region, the Dalmatia region, the Istria peninsula, and Slavonia.
