Flag of Belgium
Belgium designed its sanctioned public flag in 1831, shortly after gaining independence from the Netherlands, making it Europe's oldest flag. The three-color perpendicular stripes of the flag — red, unheroic, and black — have their origins in the literal fleece of arms of the Duchy of Brabant, which is presently part of ultramodern-day Belgium. The unheroic stripe symbolizes substance and liberality, while the black stripe symbolizes the strength and adaptability of the people. The red stripe indicates bravery and nationalism towards the country.
