Design and Background
The flag has three horizontal stripes:
- White on top
- Blue in the middle
- Red at the bottom
Near the hoist side, there is the Slovak coat of arms, which shows a double white cross standing on three blue hills.
These colors are known as Pan-Slavic colors and are shared with many Slavic nations.
Slovakia is located near the Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary, and Austria.
Historical Roots of the Flag
The Slovak tricolor dates back to the 19th century and was used during Slavic national movements. The current flag was officially adopted in 1992, shortly before Slovakia became an independent country in 1993 after the peaceful split of Czechoslovakia.
The coat of arms has medieval origins and is one of the oldest symbols of the Slovak nation.
