Flag Detail

Selected in 1984 following the revolution and a name change from Upper Volta to Burkina Faso, the national flag of Burkina Faso is Red on top and green on the bottom, two equal parallel stripes, with a yellow five-pointed star in the middle showing a red reversal. This red stands in for the red of the Burkinabe people's sacrifices and the revolutionary fight for freedom. Given the nation's economy, the green stands for hope and plenty of agricultural resources. Inspired by Burkina Faso's "Unity, Progress and Justice," the yellow star stands for harmony among the several ethnic groups living in the nation.
