One of the first flags used in South America, Bolivia adopted the national flag in 1851 Inspired by the colors Simón Bolívar, one of the heroes spearheading the struggle to be free from Spanish control, the sign consists of three horizontal stripes – red, yellow, and green – with the Bolivian national emblem centered in the middle. The ruby stripe stands for valor and sacrifice; the yellow stripe stands for mineral wealth and natural resources.
