Three upright stripes in green, red, and yellow copy Pan-African colours running on Cameroon's flag. The guiding light for the national unity is the red line in the midst of the golden five-pointed star. Adopted on May 20, 1975, the design shows Cameroon's dedication to its African identity and sovereignty. The southern areas' vegetation is shown by the green line; yellow denotes the northern savannas; red stands for independence and union.
